At a time when the UK was only just emerging from a damaging recession, Funding Circle wanted to increase awareness and understanding of their model in contrast to high street banks and cement their position in the SME lending space.
Funding Circle commissioned research highlighting the speed at which traditional banking alternatives are growing, despite a gloomy economy. Under the Funding for Lending Scheme, The Bank of England provides up to £80 billion of loans to banks at below market rates in exchange for them lending that money to households and SME’s. However, the study claimed that more than half of small businesses were being put off applying for a loan due to the banks’ lending criteria being too difficult for them to qualify for, and were therefore looking for alternatives. To communicate to small and local business owners across the UK, Funding Circle’s Co-Founder, James Meeking, spoke to radio stations across the UK about why small businesses struggle with getting loans from their banks and how peer to peer lending works whilst also giving advice for small businesses. Coverage highlights included BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Norfolk and BBC Radio Oxford. Campaign in Numbers Funding Circle secured a reach of 1.75 million listeners with 2 hours 47 minutes worth of coverage. Funding Circle’s campaign secured a total of 55 items of coverage up and down the UK. |
